MPIP Launches Open Access Initiatives

As open policies and practices become more the norm, there has been considerable debate on the topic of open access publishing. This debate has highlighted a lack of common understanding of what open access is, why it is important, and how it works. To address this misunderstanding, Medical Publishing Insights & Practices (MPIP)* is launching 2 initiatives during Open Access Week 2018.

From Statistics to Humans with a Voice

Earlier this year I visited Área Reconquista, a poor heavily polluted neighbourhood in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, with a group of people who have an interest in community science. We were planning to co-develop an open project on air quality monitoring with the community. It was an important day, as we were…

Tennessee Features Stories of Public Need for Access to Research for OA Week

At the University of Tennessee Libraries, our Open Access Week events for the past two years involved outreach workshops to local nonprofit agencies. Staff from many nonprofit organizations visited campus and our subject librarians helped them find research and data to help in designing interventions and writing grant proposals. Then, we asked the nonprofits to fill out a survey and/or participate in a short interview about why open access to research matters to them and to the communities…
