What are your goals for OA Week?: Our main event will be a panel featuring Clifford Lynch, Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information, and several Mason faculty (undetermined to date) who have published in open access journals or otherwise support the OA initiative. Panel participants will be cross-disciplinary in an effort to encourage greater awareness and interest in OA by more faculty. I anticipate the panel will share their views on OA policies, publishing choices, challenges (if any) with OA publishing, tenure practices, etc.

We also plan to set up OA information tables in each campus library (we have 4), show video clips, distribute pamphlets, etc. Previously we had tried info kiosks in the main campus's food court but that wasn't worth the effort (i.e., not enough traffic). It got kind of embarrassing (& semi-pathetic) when we accosted people walking by.

Like last year, we will decorate the George Mason statue with OA paraphernalia, give free loot to folks who listen to us (even briefly), and we may have a drawing for some semi-big-ticket items at the panel discussion. All this depends on funding, of course!

Free items are always welcome, from PLoS and SPARC.

2012 OA Week preparations

Well, the fall semester madness has begun and, with it, our plans for OA Week are taking shape! We decided to expand OA Week into OA Month, this year, simply because this allows us greater flexibility in planning, plus we want to do more on each of the three Mason campuses.

Fall is here and OA Week soon to come

Hello OA friends!! We are getting geared up for an exciting week in October at George Mason University--setting up space, ordering materials, planning outreach, etc. I would love to hear about activities you have planned this year to involve students and faculty.

Open Scholarship Opens Minds

George Mason University in Virginia, USA, is hosting an OA panel on October 20, 2010. In course our talk a few students were excited to be partners in promotion. The University Librarian had no objection. The first meeting started with 2 students, then 6, 20, and finally we had over 40 students volunteering to do various activities like beauty pageant, articles, bandanas, badges, invitation cards etc They even had a student coordinator who was briefing the library on requirement and progress. These are the students (41) the library treated to a retreat. The retreat was just about having fun at Fourteen Flls and motivating the students.to get involved. They have been carrying open access messages everywhere including retreat venue if you have seen the photos. We had buttons donated by PLOS and they proved an instant hit

The dance was popular music meant to pull crowds. But we had a poem presentation entitled '' serenading open access" I think its already uploaded here.

At 8:00pm on November 2, 2010, Jane said…: Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology library Dept have held several exhibitions with low turn out. This time we involved the students and we were actually overwhelmed by turnout the whole week. They are so creative and resourceful and helped us reach the faculty. They did t-shirts, bandana, name tags with open access logos, posters and OA ambassadors sashes. We also decided to have fun.We had dances and salsa to pull crowds and a retreat at Fourteen Falls for participants. See activities photos I have uploaded or by JKUMUN
