Announcement of Panel for International Open Access Week -- October 24-28

Panel:  Challenges of Open Access in the Digital Age, Tues Oct. 25, 1:00-3:00pm, OSL240

• Rhonda L. Neugebauer, UCR Open Access Initiatives Coordinator and Latin American Studies, will describe UC and UCR activities related to open access, including the July 2013 Academic Senate mandate for faculty deposit of scholarly articles into open access repositories, the campus implementation of the UC Open Access Policy, the early stages of support for Open Educational Materials/Open Educational Resources, and the commemoration of international Open Access Week around the world. 

• Gabriel J. Gardner, Senior Assistant Librarian for Criminal Justice, Linguistics and Romance, German, and Russian Languages and Literatures at CSU Long Beach will discuss his study of use and access to scholarly journals, including an assessment of Sci-Hub’s pirating of articles offered for free, and for which he was criticized by the President and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, Thomas H. Allen, who wrote to the CSU-LB’s Dean of Libraries, Roman Kachan. 

• Alison Scott, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communication, will address the significance of transformative scholarly publishing projects and best practices.

• Kent LaCombe, Water Resources Librarian, Water Resources Collections and Archives, will talk about the University of Nebraska, Lincoln faculty deposits into the IR Digital Commons, and comment on how librarians at UNL fostered high publication deposit rates from campus affiliates.

• Open Access Opportunities for UCR Researchers:  Librarians Kat Koziar (Engineering), Tiffany Moxham (Medicine) and Michele Potter (Engineering), will provide a quick update on UCR’s current open access discount and waiver agreements as well as a brief look at emergent open access publishing models.  They will also discuss tips on spotting and avoiding predatory “open access” publishers.
