The title of this lecture is:
"Dismal data scientists? The data revolution in economics"
Economics is experiencing a data revolution which is transforming how data is collected, stored, and analysed. The talk provides a non-specialist overview of the challenges and opportunities of this revolution for economics, linking them especially to how other disciplines, and new fields, are evolving. Particular challenges for economics concern how traditional empirical analyses relate to the ‘new data analytics’ now emerging from computer science, and which are having enormous impacts on business practice. Particular opportunities arise for economics in the scale and granularity of data on the economy increasingly available, and insights at both micro and macro levels these afford. Dr Kane will offer some reflections on the consequence for economics education as well as research practice.
