Event Description

2015 is the 350th anniversary of the birth of the academic journal: the “Journal des scavans” in France and the Royal Society of London’s “Philosophical Transactions” both began publishing in 1665. This is as good a time as any to celebrate the enormous positive contribution made by the academic journal to scholarly communications – but also to debate whether its continued hegemony is serving the world at all well in an open access environment.

Beasley is currently Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta.  He formerly served as University Librarian at Concordia University, where he co-chaired the Open Access Working Group that successfully proposed a Resolution on Open Access to the Senate in 2010. Beasley has an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and an M.A. in Library Studies from University College, London.
