DESCRIPTION:2015 is the 350th anniversary of the birth of the academi
 c journal: the “Journal des scavans” in France and the Royal Soci
 ety of London’s “Philosophical Transactions” both began publishi
 ng in 1665. This is as good a time as any to celebrate the enormous po
 sitive contribution made by the academic journal to scholarly communic
 ations – but also to debate whether its continued hegemony is servin
 g the world at all well in an open access environment. \n \nBeasley 
 is currently Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alb
 erta.  He formerly served as University Librarian at Concordia Univer
 sity, where he co-chaired the Open Access Working Group that successfu
 lly proposed a Resolution on Open Access to the Senate in 2010. Beas
 ley has an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford Univers
 ity and an M.A. in Library Studies from University College, London.\nT
