What do you know about automatic textbook billing? What do people on your campus know about it? Automatic textbook billing promises to lower textbook prices for students but it can leave some with more limitations.
OpenStax, Rice University’s educational technology initiative publishing free textbooks, recently launched Free the Textbook. Free the Textbook is a nationwide initiative that calls on college and university leaders, educators, and students to closely examine the fine print of their automatic billing programs and make sure they are inclusive of ALL students.
OpenStax’s managing director, Daniel Williamson, will hold a press conference for student journalists, reporters, and writers. Anyone is welcome to attend whether you're a student reporter, a seasoned journalist, a faculty member, or just curious about Free the Textbook. In this press conference, we will cover the following:
- An overview of automatic textbook billing, also known as Inclusive Access and other brand names
- An introduction to the Free the Textbook initiative and movement
- A Q&A session to answer your questions
Please contact freethetextbook@openstax.org with questions. Resources for reporting on automatic textbook billing, the textbook market, open educational resources, OpenStax, and Free the textbook will be provided.
