Event Description

Digital technology has transformed everyday creativity, giving everyone with an Internet connection and a “share” button the tools to be content producers. However, along with freedom of dissemination and ease of content re-use, issues of copyright become complex. The same laws that help to cultivate creativity by protecting ownership and incentives can also chill creativity by constraining re-use and access. In this talk I discuss case studies of creative remix and critique in the context of traditional copyright laws, explaining the power of fair use tempered by the challenges that content creators can face. I also present Creative Commons as a paradigm within copyright that has transformed modes of openness and in doing so allowed for new forms and scales of creativity and innovation.
