Event Description

Win earbuds all week at the Research Help Office with Open Access Trivia

Visit the Research Help Office on the upper level of the library October 22 through October 25 between 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the answer to our daily trivia question to get a pair of earbuds, while supplies last. Trivia will be posted daily on social media and at the Reference Help Office. Stop in and tell the librarian the correct answer to get a pair of earbuds. All week questions will relate to Open Access.

Open Wikipedia Workshop

October 22, noon to 1 p.m. in Galvin Library, Library Learning Classroom (LLC)

Wikipedia is a gateway to quality research, yet much of that research is inaccessible due to paywall restrictions. Join the growing effort to make the references in Wikipedia articles more accessible by linking to quality Open Access sources and improving articles related to Open initiatives in a workshop hosted by Galvin Library. Attendees should have some familiarity using Wikipedia, but experience editing is not required. Attendees will learn the basics of making Wikipedia edits and will be able to contribute to efforts to make research more accessible.

Register now. Can’t attend? Register to have the recording sent to you. Contact: library@iit.edu with questions.

Paywall: The Business of Scholarship Screening

October 24, 4:45 to 6 p.m. in The Bog

Have you ever tried to access an academic article and got stopped by a Paywall? Join Galvin Library for a screening of Paywall: The Business of Scholarship. Paywall is a documentary that unpacks the ecosystem of scholarly publishing and focuses on the need for open access to publicly funded research. The screening will take place on October 24 at 4:45 in The Bog. Stick around afterword for discussion with your colleagues. This event is co-sponsored by Chris White, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, and Fred Hickernell, Vice Provost for Research.

Grey Literature Workshop

October 24, noon to 1 p.m. in Galvin Library, Library Learning Classroom (LLC)

Many types of scientific and technical literature are never professionally or commercially published, yet are still useful or even essential for research. This includes things like specifications, white papers, research reports, conference papers, theses & dissertations, clinical trials, annual reports, standards, best practices, and many more. These documents are frequently referred to as “grey literature” and are available from a variety of sources including corporate websites, government agencies, universities, and others. While not all grey literature is free or open access, much of it is. This workshop will show how to find free open access grey literature from a number of governmental and non-governmental sources.
