From Universal Green Open Access to Open Science
Once the world’s universities, research institutions and research funders have effectively mandated that all research articles must be made open access (“Green OA”) by being self-archived in institutional repositories immediately upon acceptance for publication, institutions will cancel their journal subscriptions, forcing journals to downsize and convert to OA publishing (“Gold OA”), paid for out of a fraction of institutions’ windfall subscription cancellation savings. Peer- reviewed research and data will be accessible to all under CC-BY licences that allow text-mining and reuse of both text and data, across all disciplinary and national boundaries, maximizing research collaboration, cross-fertilization, growth and progress.
