Open Access Week

October 23 - 29, 2023 | Everywhere

Librarians have played a crucial, leading role in advocating for Open Access worldwide. As a traditional focal point for scholarly communication innovation, libraries continue to exercise their leadership by encouraging faculty members, administrators, and students to engage in Open Access Week activities.
  • In 2009, librarians were the key drivers behind the remarkable height of participation in Open Access Week. By hosting Webcasts (Athabasca University), live events (Cambridge University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, University of Zimbabwe…), tabling (University of Calgary), wearing t-shirts (Simmons College), and reaching out to administrators, faculty, students, public libraries, and others, libraries drove understanding of Open Access to new levels last year. Take a look at http://oad.simmons.edu/oadwiki/Events_celebrating_Open_Access_Week for examples of how libraries participated in 2009.
  • In 2010, the Slovene Library Association will hold an Open Access conference in Ljubljana to highlight the achievements of Slovenian science, with a keynote from the Director of the Slovenian Research Agency.
