International Symposium on University Rankings and Scholarly Impact in the Open Access Era

Monday, October 22nd 2012
São Paulo – SP - Brazil

XV Event Celebrating the Book and the Library Week at USP and the International Open Access Week
University Rankings have become important tools used by both students and academic professionals across the world. The participation in university rankings has been providing excellent results, such as the increase in the quality of academic activities and visibility. New demands of globalization have led Latin American Universities to speed up the internationalization process of their education and research activities. On the other hand, the open access movement encourages the broad and quick advance of scholarly visibility. In this scenario, we have been facing tremendous challenges in collecting, organizing and disseminating scholarly material from our institutions.

Objectives:

Discuss challenges posed by international university ranking systems to Latin American universities, particularly to Brazilian universities.
Explore the open access movement and the impact generated by the increased visibility and access to intellectual production (scientific, technological and artistic) of universities, from a multidimensional view.
