Open access (OA) to scholarly research has been a policy move embraced by governments, libraries, publishers and the global research community. Opinions, though, run strong on the issue of which financial models will foster OA’s long-term viability in concert with traditional scholarly publishing. Attitudes, for example, toward article processing charges vary by community; key stakeholder roles are shifting; and, in the Humanities and Social Sciences, OA monographs' different format requirements call for varied funding models. 

To explore these issues in the context of OA and much more, NFAIS is hosting a One-Day Workshop, both in-person and virtual, Friday, October 23, at The Hub's Cira Centre in Philadelphia.

For this special Workshop, NFAIS is bringing together thought leaders from the non-profit, commercial, consulting and academic sectors to share perspectives and research on the impact of OA on the scholarly community and on the imperative to advance knowledge, information and research.

This event’s presenters will focus on the range of ideas and current practices that aim to drive a stable, sustainable and scalable path for OA, enabling the global scholarly record to thrive over the long term.

• Building OA financial models that minimize risk to publishers
• Predictions about the future of OA and how OA can become fully mainstreamed
• Discussion and analysis of recent NFAIS survey results on APCs as a funding model for OA research publication
