If Open Access publishing becomes ubiquitous, major intermediary roles of librarians - journal selection, acquisition, and subscription management - would be eliminated. This talk looks at alternative ways in which academic librarians can participate in the production of scholarly works within our institutions. This has the potential to enhance our status, but will entail re-examining our mission, challenging traditional sources of power, and modifying organizational structure.
