UT's Open Access Steering Committee is planning a special event the week of Oct. 22, 2012 (Open Access Week).

Panelists will share their experiences in three focused areas:  1) having their work published in OA venues  2) reviewing for and editing OA publications, 3) establishing and running an OA journal and/or repository.  Finally, we have special guests lined up to speak about everything that's required to get open access off the ground as an accepted and normal mode of scholarly communication at your institution:  from empowering faculty to gaining administrative support.

8:15-8:45  Coffee & Refreshments

8:45-9:00  Opening Remarks (Dr. Benjamin Pryor, VP Academic Programs, UT)

Morning Session

  • 9:00-9:15  Opening Session.  What is Open Access (OA) and Why is it Important?  Lightning round of teaser information presented by librarians.  Acknowledge global OA trend and detractors.
  • 9:15-10:30  Panel Discussion 1.  OA Repositories.  Several speakers will share their experiences with submitting their work to disciplinary or institutional OA repositories.  Dr. Geoffrey Rapp (UT Law)  What does it take to start up and populate an institutional repository (IR)?  Arjun Sabharwal (UT Libraries)
  • Break with refreshments
  • 10:45-12:00  Panel Discussion 2.  OA Journals.  What is it like to be an author, editor or peer reviewer for an OA journal?  Dr. Kenneth Hensley, Dr. Robert Mrak (UT-HS Campus); Kevin Hawkins (University of Michigan Libraries)

12:00-1:00  Catered Lunch 

Afternoon Session

  • 1:15-2:30  Panel Discussion 3.  OA Publishing.  What does it take to get your own OA journal off the ground?  Dr. Edmund Lingan (UT-Main Campus); Robert Mrak (UT-HS Campus); Kevin Hawkins (University of Michigan Libraries)
  • Break with refreshments
  • 2:45-4:00  Panel Discussion 4.  Three (3) speakers will share their experiences with getting OA off the ground from as many points of view.  A dean/provost, a faculty librarian, and a disciplinary faculty member from one institution that successfully promoted and enacted an open access policy at their institution will share their stories, offer advice, and take questions.  Dr. Sean Decatur, Dr. Ray English, Dr. Sebastiaan Faber (Oberlin College)

4:00-4:30 Wrap-Up with refreshments
