SUMMARY:Past, Present, and Future: A Conversation on Open Access with
 Leslie Chan
DESCRIPTION:As one of the original signatories to the Budapest Open Ac
cess Initiative (BOAI), Leslie Chan has been at the forefront of the o
pen access movement for 20 years. At the time of signing, the BOAI off
ered a hopeful vision for the future of scholarly communication in whi
ch scholars would use the internet to take back the means of academic
production and provide free, unrestricted access to scholarly outputs.
\nIn the years since the BOAI, open access has made a significant impa
ct on the publishing landscape, yet many of the inequities, monopolies
, and incentive structures that existed 20 years ago are still in plac
 e. For open access advocates seeking to upend traditional modes of aca
demic publishing, it is imperative that we take a critical look at the
trajectory of the open access movement and reflect on its successes a
nd missed opportunities . \nJoin UBC Library and the Centre for Teach
ing, Learning, and Technology  for a conversation with Leslie Chan to
discuss the history of the open access movement from BOAI to today an
d what steps we can take in the future to work towards the original pr
omise of an equitable, scholar-led communication and research landscap
e.\nThis session is held during Pacific Daylight Time – PDT Time Zo
