SUMMARY:Open Access Week Shenzhen: Movie Screening
DESCRIPTION:English Details: This year has been a turning point in how
scientific knowledge is shared. Plan-S from many of the major funders
in Europe (and likely to spread to global funders such as the Gates F
oundation) have stated that by 2020, research funded by public grants
must be published in true open access journals or platforms. Meaning t
hat most European researchers currently would not be able to publish i
n Nature, Cell and Science. Over 500 organisations (including the Mana
gement Innovation & Evaluation Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sci
ences & GigaScience) have signed the DORA pledge not to use the flawed
Journal Impact Factor. With the Chinese MOST also in the process of c
hanging its policies with regards to these issue this will have big im
plications on research and collaboration in China as well. To help res
earchers in China understand the implications we are organising the fi
rst ever Open Access Week event at China National GeneBank, with a 1 h
our film screening and Q and A.\n\nPaywall: The Business of Scholarshi
p, a new documentary which focuses on the need for open access to rese
arch and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion USD
a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 3
5-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevie
r and looks at how that profit margin are greater than some of the mos
t profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook, Tencent and Google.
Featuring interviews with the top names in the open access and publish
ing arena, and including Alexandra Elbakyan, Creator of Sci-Hub, this
will hopefully help participants understand the big picture of why the
se changes are happening, and where we are going in the future. After
the talk there will be a Q&A with Open Access advocate and GigaScienc
e Executive Editor Scott Edmunds who will be on hand to answer any que
stions on the topic. He'll also bring some Open Access gifts and goodi
es for participants.\n\nFor more, and to see an online version of the
