DESCRIPTION:University of Nebraska at Omaha Libraries will mark Open A
 ccess Week 2018 with a presentation by Dean of Libraries at the Univer
 sity of Kansas Kevin L. Smith, an expert on open access within the sch
 olarly community. Smith will speak to the campus community on “Lever
 aging your Rights for Greater Impact.”\nSmith’s talk will be follo
 wed by a box lunch. RSVP here. This event is open to the public. \nIn
  the afternoon session, Smith will present \"Becoming a Copyright Coac
 h\" for local librarians. This presentation is based on his book manus
 cript for the American Library Association.\nKevin L. Smith became the
  Dean of Libraries at the University of Kansas in May 2016, after 10 y
 ears as Director of Copyright and Scholarly Communications at the Duke
  University Libraries. As both a librarian and a lawyer specializing i
 n intellectual property issues, Smith’s role at Duke was to advise f
 aculty, staff, and students about the impact of copyright, licensing, 
 and the changing nature of scholarly publishing in higher education. P
 rior to that, Smith was director of the Pilgrim Library at Defiance Co
 llege in Ohio, where he also taught constitutional law. His teaching e
 xperience is various, having taught courses in theology, law, and libr
 ary science.\nSmith is the author of numerous articles on the impact o
 f copyright law and the internet on scholarly research as well as libr
 aries’ role in the academy. He has been a highly regarded blogger on
  these issues for many years, and in 2013 published Owning and Using S
 cholarship: An IP Handbook for Teachers and Researchers with the Assoc
 iation of College and Research Libraries. Smith holds a BA from Hamilt
 on College in Clinton, N.Y., an MA from Yale Divinity School, an MLS f
 rom Kent State University, and a JD from Capital University. He did do
 ctoral work in theology and literature at the University of Chicago. S
 mith has been admitted to the bar in Ohio and North Carolina.\nFor add
